A post-dated cheque carries a future date. Present it before that date and the bank should refuse it — the cheque becomes payable on the date written, not the date handed over.
It is how a large share of recurring payments work in the UAE and across the Gulf, and it is common in India too: rent, school fees, instalments, and rental agreements where a landlord takes twelve cheques up front.
Why they are used
- Rent. Tenancy in the UAE routinely involves handing over several cheques covering the year.
- Instalments. A payment plan secured by dated cheques.
- Cash-flow timing. Issuing now for a date when funds will be there.
The risk sits with the issuer
When you write a post-dated cheque you are committing to having funds on a date that may be months away. If the balance is not there when it is presented, the cheque bounces — and a bounce is not merely embarrassing. Consequences vary by country and can include bank charges, damaged banking relationships and legal exposure. See why cheques bounce.
Keeping track is the real problem
One post-dated cheque is trivial. Thirty across four tenancies and two vehicle loans is a scheduling exercise, and it is where people get caught — not because they lack the money, but because they lost track of what is due to hit the account this month.
What helps:
- Record every cheque as you issue it, with its date.
- Look forward, not back. The useful question is "what clears in the next 30 days", which needs a forward-dated view.
- Mark them off as they clear, so the outstanding list stays true.
In ChequeMaster each cheque carries a date and a status, so you can filter forward-dated cheques still marked Issued to see what is coming. See reports and advanced search.
Validity still applies
A post-dated cheque's validity period runs from the date on the cheque, not the date you handed it over. A cheque dated three months ahead is valid for the usual period after that date. See cheque validity.
